Client Profile
For more than two decades, JC pursued high-performance audio and video through multiple systems and room builds. This project—his third complete theater—was not intended to be incremental.
It was intended to be definitive.
After years of refinement, the goal became clear: not more output or better specifications, but real-world performance—power, precision, and musicality that holds together at reference level, under real content, in a real room.
Project Overview
This theater was conceived as a fully sound-isolated, professionally engineered environment—designed from the ground up to deliver predictable, reference-grade performance.
From the beginning, Acoustic Frontiers was engaged to define performance targets and engineer the system holistically—ensuring that architecture, acoustics, and system design were aligned.
HYPERSUB, developed as an extension of that same methodology, was integrated early as part of the low-frequency system architecture.
Every decision was driven by one objective:
Predictable, repeatable performance in the real room.
Room Overview and Challenges
The theater measures approximately 21' 8.5" × 16' 6.5" × 9' 3.25", built using full room-within-a-room construction.
Even in a dedicated environment, challenges remained:
Controlling modal behavior below 100 Hz
Achieving uniform bass across all seats
Managing decay and energy buildup
Integrating low-frequency performance with the front stage
Without system-level engineering, even purpose-built rooms can produce inconsistent results.

Solution and Why HYPERSUB
Acoustic Frontiers delivered a complete system design package, including:
Full room layout and AV engineering
Subwoofer modeling and placement optimization
Acoustic treatment design
Isolation, HVAC, and electrical coordination
Calibration and system verification
Low-frequency performance was defined through modeling before installation—establishing placement, distribution, and behavior in advance.
The final system included:
(4) HYPERSUB Frontier F-21 subwoofers
HYPERSUB 422D amplifier
Distributed front and rear placement
HYPERSUB was selected because it supports:
Modeling-driven design
Distributed low-frequency architecture
LDLC performance (Low Distortion, Low Compression)

What Changed
Before:
Bass response varied by seat
Modal behavior limited system performance
Output increased—but control did not
After:
Subwoofer placement defined through modeling
Modal interaction controlled across the room
Bass integrated with the front stage
Performance became consistent—not position-dependent
The system shifted from component-driven to system-engineered.
Results
The outcome was both measurable and audible:
Uniform bass response across seats
Controlled low-frequency behavior
Seamless system integration
Dynamics that scale without compression
The system no longer behaves differently depending on where you sit.
It behaves as a single, engineered system.
Performance improves not by changing equipment—but by engineering how the system behaves in the room.
In the Client's Words
“The system is phenomenal. Dialogue is crystal clear, surround effects are immersive, and the bass is powerful and well integrated. I’m still adjusting target curves depending on whether I’m demoing or just watching casually, but Acoustic Frontiers nailed the high frequencies from the start. I mainly adjust the bass to taste—and thankfully, the HYPERSUB F-21s can handle anything I throw at them. And I throw a lot.
Over the years, I’ve owned and tested a wide range of subwoofers: Definitive Technology, GoldenEar, SVS SB13 and PB13, MartinLogan Descent, Funk 18.0, JTR RS1, and many DIY builds—including BHS-24s in Salk enclosures, mid-bass woofers, and even a BOSS platform. Most did some things well, but none delivered both deep ULF and punchy mid-bass at the same time.
The HYPERSUB Frontier, on the other hand, does it all. I originally had another brand in mind, but Nyal introduced me to his system design process—and I’m glad he did. The HYPERSUBs are exactly what I’d been searching for: tight mid-bass punch and excellent ULF.
To give you an idea: I asked Acoustic Frontiers to create presets with up to 20dB of boost in the bass range, with another 10dB added to the sub channel. That preset is designed to scare guests—and it works. I can't even use it for long. For everyday listening, I dial it back, but I love having the flexibility.
No other subwoofer system I’ve had even comes close to what this room delivers. Reaching out to Acoustic Frontiers turned out to be one of the best decisions I made, and I highly recommend working with them if you want to get the most out of your theater.” ~J.C.
